What we do
Norwich Rearguard is a small, informal group that meets on a weekly basis to play wargames. It is our intention to be as inclusive as possible, and anyone is very welcome to come and visit us.
We provide at least one advertised game per meeting, which members and visitors are invited to play. In addition we will provide a venue and items of terrain to those who wish to organise their own games. We have the space and terrain to support 3-4 games per meeting. The society itself does not hold a large collection of figures; game organisers or players will have to provide these themselves.
As an organisation that has been in existence for some time, we have developed a few preferences towards periods, rules and scales. These are our 'core periods' and many of the programmed games will reflect that. They are merely personal opinions and not club rules, so don't be put off by them. Merely because we tend to play American Civil War games in 15mm using Piquet doesn't mean your 25mm Fire & Fury game won't be welcome.
When we meet
We hold meetings at the Belvedere Centre, Norwich, on most Tuesday evenings between 7.00 and 10.30. We also stage occasional games on Sundays every 3-4 months between 10.00am and 5.00pm. Please see our current programme for further details.
What the programme means
As a society, we aim to provide at least one wargame per meeting. These will be advertised in advance and anyone who wishes to take part should contact Graeme, Chris or the game co-ordinator. Those who turn up on the night may be accommodated if space exists but we cannot guarantee this.
Please do not feel intimidated by the programmed games. You are always welcome to come to a meeting with a game of your own, or to play one of the society's reserve games.
What it costs
We charge a meeting fee to cover the cost of the venue and other general expenses. Any excess is added to the budget reserved for buying terrain. Currently fees are £3.00 waged and £1.50 unwaged per meeting. Your first meeting as a visitor is a 'free trial' and you will not be asked to pay anything.
Occasional Sunday games are paid for by the participants; the venue cost is simply divided by the number of players. This will usually be approximately the same amount as a normal evening meeting.
There is an annual membership charge of £5.00 which is used to support the terrain budget. Please note that all games are open to visitors, you are not required to be a member to attend. As well as the satisfaction of buying terrain, members receive the following discounts from local shops:
Great Eastern Railway
199 Plumstead Road
(10% on all items)
Games Room
29a Elm Hill
(5% on all items except figures)
What we don't do
We aim to be as open and welcoming as possible, but obviously any club must have some degree of focus and we do have a few conditions;
